All doctoral students must have a thesis director and possibly a co-director and/or co-supervisors. It is recommended that a thesis management team does not exceed 2 people.
To be a thesis director, you must:
Hold the Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR) (see section application for HDR), or obtain a punctual accreditation. Accreditation is only granted once in a career and must be validated by the College of Doctoral Studies.
The supervisor must be attached to the STEP doctoral school. For new HDRs, or for HDRs arriving in Grenoble, contact the director of the doctoral school to request this attachment.
Hiring a doctoral student for a thesis is an important responsibility. The rights and duties of each of the stakeholders (doctoral student, thesis director, laboratory and doctoral school) are detailed in the thesis charter which is signed at each first registration. The responsibility of the thesis director is to make every effort to ensure that the thesis takes place in good conditions and can be defended within the normal duration of three years.
Punctual accreditation
The University of Grenoble Alpes has set up, for exceptional and justified cases, a derogation procedure, called ad hoc accreditation, which gives the possibility to a non-HDR person to supervise a thesis alone.
This person also undertakes to defend his/her HDR before the end of the supervised thesis. Accreditation can only be given once and for a single thesis.
