Thesis supervision practices

Thesis management team:

* The thesis management team is made up of a thesis director (or a co-direction) among researchers, teacher-researchers and engineers attached to the ED STEP, who hold the Habilitation to Direct Research or a one-time accreditation

* In addition, in accordance with the obligation formulated in the decree of May 25, 2016 related to doctoral training, the maximum number of doctoral students who can be simultaneously directed or co-directed by a person is set at 5, and the cumulative supervision rate must not exceed 300%. Exceptionally, the ED may derogate from this rule.

* The management team may be supplemented by a co-supervisor (not holder of the HDR). The direction of the ED strongly recommends thesis supervision to no more than 2 people in order not to "dilute" the responsibility of the thesis supervision. The thesis supervision team may exceptionally have 3 or 4 members, for example in the context of joint supervision or a doctorate involving an industrial partner.

Thesis follow-up and defense

In addition to the usual supervision tasks concerning the "research" part of the doctoral student, the thesis directors will have to:

  •   ensure the establishment of Individual Monitoring Committees (CSI)
  •   ensure that the thesis follow-up report (RST) is filled and signed
  •   ensure that the doctoral student has followed the necessary training courses
  •  constitute a valid jury for the thesis defense
