Non-catalog courses and extracurricular activities
To enrich your doctoral experience, you can take additional courses beyond the standard curriculum that are related to your research or professional goals.
Subject to approval by the STEP Doctoral School, these courses may count toward your training hours. Certain special circumstances, such as holding an elected office, a jointly supervised dissertation, or other activities recognized as part of the doctoral program, may also be counted toward your training hours.
How do I get training hours outside the catalog approved?
Training courses listed in the catalog (of the Doctoral College or the ED) are automatically approved by administrators based on the attendance sheet.
However, “non-catalog” activities that qualify for HF (Flat-Rate Training Hours) must be reviewed and approved by the ED.
Requests for validation must be submitted via your ADUM account.
Please note that there is a difference between the hours actually spent on a training course or activity and the number of Flat-Rate Training Hours granted.

Tutorial: Validating Non-Catalog Training Hours
We strongly recommend that you have your training courses approved as you complete them, so you don’t encounter any unpleasant surprises at the end of your dissertation (except for teaching: waiting until the end of your dissertation and including all supporting documents in a single application will ensure you receive the best overall HF allowance).
Please note:
Courses not listed in the catalogs require specific supporting documents (a certificate and description of activities for an organizing committee; a program listing your name or a detailed certificate for a presentation; etc.).
If you’re unsure about the number of HF hours to report, enter the actual hours, and the ED will convert them.
